Dirt at edge of carpet

FILTRATION SOILING AT THE EDGE OF THE CARPET

WHAT IS THE DIRT AT EDGES OF THE CARPET?
  • FILTRATION SOILING
Air moves across the floor and as a result dirt, dust and contaminants accumulate near the wall.

WHY DOES IT HAPPEN:

  • There are several reasons Filtration Soiling occurs on the carpet around the perimeter of the room.

  • Forced air furnaces push air, dust and dirt contaminates through the house (especially if the filter is dirty). When we walk through the house (around furniture) we kick up contaminates and drive them towards the cooler surfaces near walls.

  •  The floor adjacent to walls can be cooler than the middle of the room - warm migrates towards the cooler surfaces.

  • Naturally occurring stack effect (warm air rising) due to indoor and outdoor temperature differentials and wind blowing over the house can cause a vacuum effect drawing indoor air up through the house through cracks, crevices and opens in the framing of the house. One of many areas this up draft/stack effect occurs is near the bottom of walls. This up draft causes airborne contaminates to migrate to the walls - Filtration Soiling occurs.

  • When we vacuum we get close to walls but, sometimes we push more dust and dirt to the edge of carpet than we vacuum up. This dust and dirt are very fine contaminates and more difficult to suck up with a normal vacuum head. Therefore, you not only push fine contaminates out the edge of the carpet, but, because they're so fine, hard to pick up and the vacuum can't reach in that tight to the wall. Combined some of the other causes you end up with a dirt ring around the edge of the carpet.

There are several reasons for Filtration Soiling and dirt at the edge of your carpet.

CAN I PREVENT IT FROM HAPPENING?
  •  It depends!
  • Check your furnace filter to be sure its clean.  Seal openings at and above walls: if you can get into the attic look for exceptionally dirty areas on the insulation, this could be a clue that there are small openings under the insulation, pipes, conduit/chases, exhaust fans and vent pipes allowing air leaks and drafts through interior walls. However, getting into an attic and attempting to seal these areas is dangerous and next to impossible.  In most cases you're better off considering the soil ring around the room a characteristic of the house and just another area that needs a little extra time when cleaning.

HOW TO CLEAN:

  • Carpet cleaning products for Filtration Soiling are available. Try a strong carpet detergent and a strong vacuum with a narrow head that can get close to the walls.
